Emily Legg: Promise to Myself

4th-29th July 2022

Emily's work is rooted in her relationship with the natural world and forms an integral part of her own mental health and wellbeing. Promise to myself marks a new body of painting, a commitment to practice and self. The exhibition showcases pieces that explore painterly reverie and abundance. Inspiration comes from Somerset landscapes, poetry and personal musings, glimpses of which can be seen scrawled across the canvas amidst gestural marks, bountiful colour and abstract expression.

Taking to the canvas with an exuberant flourish, Emma’s work exhibits bold, vigorous colour, alongside tactile, textured brushstrokes. The subjects find themselves set among abundant flower gardens, often intertwined with, and framed by, tributes. Posies, buds and pompon blooms are met with bold impasto, layers of brushstrokes, pen and ink. Inspiration comes from vintage scrapbooks, photograph albums and antique textiles.

Emma studied Mixed Media Textiles at the Royal College of Art, and has lived in the Netherlands, and London, before returning to the West Country.
